Around 2002, when I was in high school, I spotted a small article about tatting in the local paper. Having a lifelong habit of teaching myself new crafts for fun, I decided to pick it up.

I shuttle tat, having found needle methods more confusing and harder to gauge. I use the little Clovers with picks (though I’ve admired handmade woods), and my preferred thread size is between 30 and 50. My favorite threads are HH Flora (I do have a small stash built before size 50 was discontinued) and DMC Cebelia. As a side effect of tatting, I also picked up hand-dying painted-style threads, though I haven’t made any in some time.

I only recently started tatting again after a few years hiatus; I somehow had gotten burnt out on it and became obsessed with other crafts instead. In my return I have found my technique to have, oddly enough, improved, as my biggest hurdle, picots, now come fairly easy!
